Decoding a lyrical Poem, Joseph Dreams, from “Her Heart Song”

“Joseph Dreams”

I lost the key to these thoughts I can't unlock

My mind was a prison cell - I yell, forget to talk

I swear he hears me from heaven's lofty heights

If I scream blood and murder think he'll open those gates?

My youth was angel wings and butterfly bellies

My woman was demon eyes and beautiful bird killings

Still, I remember the pews of you and I

As we dance in the river of peace and joy

But as we sit in the presence of laments and cries

I know fire burns our circle, but we have to try

If we close our eyes and Joseph-dream again

I think I might just fly like that feather-bird to the wind

Dance a little longer in the river and wade

Heaven might just be a mile away

Ever wonder what the real meaning behind the poem is? This lyrical poem, “Joseph Dreams,” has so much packed in it. This is a poem from Izzy Lala’s “Her Heart Song.” I hope this poem is an encouragement and hope for you - to keep dreaming.

Here’s the decoding –

I lost the key to these thoughts I can’t unlock

My mind was a prison cell – I yell, forget to talk

This is about the writer feeling she is in a prison – but it is her mind. The writer is describing how she can’t get out of this prison because her voice is lost. She yells because she is bitter, angry and feels she has no choice.

I swear he hears me from heaven's lofty heights

If I scream blood and murder think he'll open those gates?

The writer is speaking about her higher power who hears her screams but does not answer her. She wants to be freed from this ‘prison,’ but she cannot - even though she screams violently.

My youth was angel wings and butterfly bellies

My woman was demon eyes and beautiful bird killings

Her youth was light and airy. But adulthood is filled with hate – within herself - and she feels as though she has died (by her own will).

Still I remember the pews of you and I

As we dance in the river of peace and joy

But as we sit in the presence of laments and cries

I know fire burns our circle, but we have to try

She remembers her goodness. But in her present, there are tears, pain, and loathing all the life surrounding her. She feels she cannot escape.

If we close our eyes and Joseph-dream again

I think I might just fly like that feather-bird to the wind

But she keeps dreaming. And she knows one day, she will feel light and airy again.

Dance a little longer in the river and wade

Heaven might just be a mile away

If she keeps hoping and keeps waiting, then one day she just might meet her dreams.
